Microsoft’s 3D HoloDesk Will Soon Bring Holograms To Your Home

The Augmented Reality 3D HoloDesk is an ongoing project which was shown by the Microsoft Research Blog. This HoloDesk 3-D interaction works using a half-silvered mirror and a Kinect sensor to “see” your hands in 3D atmosphere and then projects visible objects around them just like any normal projecter but the difference is that your body IS acting as the screen.

This allows you to juggle virtual spheres(like shown in the video below), play with devices like phones, cards etc, and even pull out some magic cup tricks. Researcher Steve Clayton explained the project by stating that:

I won’t attempt to describe what it does in great detail, except to say that with Holodesk you can manipulate 3-D, virtual images with your hands. Whilst this is only a research project at this stage, I can envisage future applications in areas such as board gaming, rapid prototype design or perhaps even telepresence, where users would share a single 3D scene viewed from different perspectives. I know it sounds very Star Trek but this is not science fiction.

although the Holodesk isn’t the only 3-D interaction experiment currently in research but it sure is more life-like then any of the others and although CNN already has used holograms in their interviews, this project however will make holograms available for your everyday life as compared to the costly professional solutions as almost everyone has an Xbox at the moment.

Although Kinect isn’t that common and popular in Pakistan yet as it mostly focuses on dance games but it sure is catching on and the kind of project Kinect is involved with makes it the device that can change the future of Pakistani Technology.(Techcrunch)
